On top of our list we have one of the most well known villages in Heraklion. Fodele is a small mountainous evergreen paradise hidden under the shade of the orange trees. Therefore, in case you find yourself in the village do not miss on trying some fresh oranges.

If you like exploring and hiking in nature you can enjoy a walk around the Pontomantris river or visit the Fodele Towers. A fun fact of the area is that according to legend the famous Greek painter, Domenicos Theotokopoulos, widely known as El Greco, was born in Fodele. In fact, the El Greco Museum in Fodele is a must-see and one of the main attractions in Heraklion.

A village where music is everywhere. Houdetsi is a traditional village with picturesque narrow streets that has now become one of the top summer destinations in Crete. Take a walk around the village, admire nature and the stone-built houses.

To get to Houdetsi you will definitely need a vehicle as the village is located quite high up. Perhaps Ethia is not among the most famous villages of Heraklion. But it is definitely one of the most picturesque and historic destinations you can visit in Heraklion.

We start to drive downhill to meet a seaside village, Gouves. The area offers many options for entertainment, food and accommodation and is an excellent choice if you want to use it as your base to see the surrounding villages and make additional excursions near Heraklion.
